We buried our grandpa yesterday, and in the wake of grief, I woke up with this story on my heart...

“Now Jesus 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. 𝐒𝐨 when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was.” John‬ ‭11:5-6‬ ‭

If Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus, then why would He stay two more days where He was, allowing Lazarus to die, before rushing off to heal him? The sisters had to experience the agony of watching their beloved die, and Lazarus went through the horror of actually feeling his body shut down. Yes, the power of Jesus would be beautifully demonstrated, but these people, who were precious to Jesus, had to suffer first.

Why? Because Jesus loved them.

That seems absolutely counterintuitive.

Jesus acted in a way that didn’t make sense to them because He knew it was for their good and His glory. He loved them too much to act like they expected.

The words of both sisters - “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died” (John‬ ‭11:21‬) - might resonate deeply with your grieving heart this morning. God, if you had been here, then my loss wouldn’t have happened. But we must remember that when God acts unpredictably, it comes from His great love and knowledge that His plan will lead to His glory and our good. It will all make sense one day.

The entire story is full of treasures! Click here to read it!
