Swallowed up in life

“For while we are still in this tent, we groan under the burden and sigh deeply (weighed down, depressed, oppressed)–not that we want to put off the body (the clothing of the spirit), but rather that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal (our dying body) may be swallowed up by life [after the resurrection].” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

“While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭NLT‬‬ When our hope burns bright and looks forward to our promised King’s return, the believer lives in a constant state of tension. We live with the burden of our earthly bodies, but the attitude that looks forward in great expectation keeps us persevering as we wait. We know Jesus is returning, but we don’t know when, so we live everyday as if it’s today that He returns. This believer has their gaze fixed on the perfect eternity, and is therefore motivated to resist temptation. This is how joy and sorrow coexist.

When a thought pops in your mind and tells you that you can’t go on one more day, and leads your mind into the sin of ruminating on suicide, hoping for the day that these dying bodies will be swallowed up in life will give you hope.

And hope does not disappoint.

When flashbacks capture your attention, causing you to be focused on how difficult it is to live in a body that has been marked by trauma and continues to react as if the trauma were still happening (PTSD), cry out to God and remember Truth.....Jesus is coming back and all the pain will pass away and that tension between your broken flesh and your hopeful spirit will cease to exist. It will be perfect freedom.

It takes discipline to instance by instance, exercise the power that lives in you as a redeemed child of God, but it is possible to be retrained to set your mind on the eternal. If you are groaning and sighing in your burdened mortal body today, remind yourself (make it your phone wallpaper, write it on your hand, leave yourself a sticky note)....

Ask God to help, He will never abandon you.
