What Have You Done?

Don’t let mental illness silence the voice God has given you in this generation - either with shame, or worse, death. There is actual help available, that those of us who suffer in this way tend to be scared of, doubtful will work, or are ashamed to need. It’s ok to utilize the good gifts of medical and therapeutic help that God has provided. These resources, when coupled with saturating your mind with Scripture, can be incredibly helpful. Even with a diagnosis of “treatment resistant depression,” like I write to you from this morning.

I’ve imagined standing before God had I chosen the escape death would have offered. My mind always imagines this scripture....

“So the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Genesis‬ ‭3:13‬).

I insert myself in there..

“Julie, what have you done?”

“The serpent deceived me and I ate the fruit (of suicide or apathy or shame or....),” is what I imagine myself saying in response.

If you belong to Christ, no enemy can pluck you from His hand. Your soul is secure. But you can be tempted to waste your life. There is kingdom purpose in depression. God can use your weakness for His glory. May we never hear the words, when reflecting back on our one chance at life...

“What have you done?”
